Concentrates are cannabis with most of the plant removed: live resin, rosin, badder, shatter, distillate and RSO, sold by the gram or half gram. They are made by licensed manufacturers, lab tested by batch and labeled by total THC in milligrams. California limits an adult-use purchase to 8 grams of concentrate a day, counted across every product that contains it.

The concentrate shelf is where the names get technical. Every product on it is the resin of the plant separated from the plant material, and the names describe how that was done and what the result looks like. Rosin is pressed with heat and pressure and no solvent. Live resin is extracted from flower frozen at harvest, with a solvent the manufacturer removes. Badder, sauce and shatter describe textures of extract. Distillate is a refined oil. RSO is a thick, dark, whole-plant oil sold in a syringe.
All of it is made by licensed manufacturers in facilities the state inspects, and all of it reaches the shelf lab tested and sealed with a batch number. What you cannot do is make it yourself with a solvent: chemical extraction without a licence is a crime in California, and butane extraction at home is dangerous in a way the law recognises.
What the names mean
Rosin is the solventless one, pressed from flower or hash; live rosin is pressed from ice-water hash made from frozen flower. Live resin is solvent-extracted from frozen flower and keeps more of the plant's terpenes than a cured extract. Badder, budder, sauce, diamonds and shatter are textures the same extract can be finished into: soft, crystalline or glassy. Distillate is refined until little but the cannabinoids remain, and is what fills most vape cartridges. RSO, Rick Simpson Oil, is a whole-plant oil eaten or applied rather than vaporised. The label names the type and the batch.
How concentrate is sold and labeled
Concentrates are sold by net weight, most often a gram or half a gram in a small glass jar, or a syringe for RSO. The label carries the universal symbol, the warning, the net weight, the batch number and the lab's total THC and CBD in milligrams per package. The milligram figure is high because the product is concentrated; a gram of extract is not comparable to a gram of flower, and the dosage guides on this site are written with that in mind.
The 8 gram concentrate limit
California allows an adult to buy up to 8 grams of concentrated cannabis a day, and the figure counts concentrate wherever it is: a jar of rosin, the oil in a vape cartridge, the extract inside an edible, the kief in an infused pre-roll. Flower is counted separately under its own 28.5 gram limit. Eight grams of concentrate is a large amount; a typical order is one or two grams.
What you need to use it
Most concentrates are vaporised on a rig or a portable device that heats them, which is why the accessories shelf carries both. Distillate and some live resins come in cartridges instead, which need only a battery. RSO is not vaporised; it is eaten or applied, and its syringe is marked in doses. A budtender can match the format to what you already own.

- Is rosin the same thing as resin?
- No. Rosin is pressed from flower or hash with heat and pressure and no solvent. Live resin is extracted from frozen flower with a solvent that the licensed manufacturer removes before testing. Both are lab tested by batch; the label names which one is in the jar.
- Does a vape cartridge count toward the 8 grams?
- Yes. The oil in a cartridge is concentrate, and the 8 gram daily limit counts concentrate in every form it is sold in, cartridges and edibles included. A one gram cart is one gram of the 8.
- Can I make my own concentrate from flower I bought?
- Not with a solvent. Manufacturing concentrate by chemical extraction without a state licence is a crime under California's Health and Safety Code, and butane extraction at home has caused fires and explosions. Solventless methods like pressing rosin are lawful for personal use. Every concentrate on our shelf was made under a licence and tested.
